Pakistan Legal Awareness Program

This project was developed to raise awareness of human rights in the target districts. The project aims to contribute to improving democracy and governance, facilitating access to justice and enabling people to know their rights as human beings. The objectives of the project are: women`s rights are protected by the constitution, and other legislative measures are taken by the government, but victims still cannot receive help in the true spirit of all these laws favorable to women because they are not known and do not enforce the laws. Stakeholders such as police, judiciary, lawyers, MLOs and service providers lack the capacity to effectively implement gender-friendly legislation. These laws deal with various forms of violence against women such as harassment in the workplace, acid attacks, honour killings, forced marriages, etc. While Talaq could traditionally be given orally, it is now a requirement under the Muslim Family Law Ordinance 1961 and the Supreme Court`s decision in Farah Naz v.

Family Court, Sahiwal (PLD 2006 SC 457) that the talaq must be submitted in writing and a copy of it must be sent to the relevant Trade Union Council.
