The American Bar Association is responsible for accrediting colleges across the country that offer paralegal and legal degree programs. Those who work as CLA have an associate degree from one of these accredited schools, but some have a bachelor`s degree in paralegal studies. You may be eligible to take the certification exam with a degree in another field, but you will need to prove that you first took a number of paralegal and legal aid courses. Students must also take at least one course in legal ethics before taking this exam. 3. National certification. If, prior to submitting an application, an applicant (i) has received the Certified Legal Assistant (CLA)/Certified Paralegal (CP) designation from the National Association of Legal Assistants and subsequently retains their active status; (ii) the DESIGNATION PACE-Registered Paralegal (RP)/Certified Registered Paralegal (CRP) by the National Federation of Paralegal Associations; or (iii) any other national paralegal qualification approved by the Board, the applicant is not required to meet the training standard described in point 2 above.
